Songs Mentioned in the Podcast and the Paper

Yo Perreo Sola was released in 2020 by famous Boriquén artist, Bad Bunny. This song talks about perreo culture, arguing that women are able to dance Perreo by themselves and be empowered by doing so. The use of this song within the context of this project is to examine rhetoric used by men in the industry (although this take is certainly non-traditional) and understand the shifting dynamics within the production of reggaeton.

Hit song “Quiero Bailar,” released in 2003 by Ivy Queen - a Borinqueña artist - will be used for analysis on language in early reggaeton developed by female artists. IQ was well known for being a pioneer and leader as a reggaetonera and frequently broke the mold of “femininity” in her genre and in the African Diaspora.

“Envolver,” released in 2021 by Anitta, a popular Brazilian reggaetonera, will be used to examine rhetoric and imagery in contemporary reggaeton. In her video, Anitta dances Perreo, but is presented as the clear center of the imagery presented. Her video and lyrics serve as a case study for the juxtaposition of the male gaze and feminine imagery.
